Kendrick Lamar scores five BET Hip Hop Awards

Kendrick Lamar reigned supreme at the 2013 BET Hip Hop Awards, winning five categories and narrowly beating out Drake and Jay Z for the top prizes.

The Don’t Kill My Vibe hitmaker, who went into the prizegiving with 14 nods, walked out with five awards, including Lyricist of the Year, MVP of the Year, and Sweet 16, which honours the best featured 16-bar verse on a single track.

Lamar also took home Album of the Year for good kid, m.A.A.d city, as well as Best Collabo for his contribution to A$AP Rocky’s hit song, Problems.

Drake scooped four awards – Best Hip-Hop Video, Track of the Year, People’s Champ Award and Best Club Banger, for his featured rhymes on French Montana’s Pop That.

Veteran Jay Z added two honours to his collection by winning Best Live Performer and Hustler of the Year.

The ceremony, which aired in the U.S. on Tuesday (15Oct13), but was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, last month (Sep13), was hosted by Snoop Lion and included performances by Montana, Rick Ross, 2 Chainz, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Lamar, who proved he was worthy of the accolades with an impressive four-minute freestyle rap.

Chad Kroeger heaps praise on new wife in first major joint interview

Nickelback star Chad Kroeger has opened up about marriage to his new bride Avril Lavigne, insisting he loves watching Harry Potter films with her and enjoys her cooking.

The couple wed in France in July (13) and the rocker insists he and his wife are still enjoying the honeymoon period.

In a joint TV interview with Entertainment Tonight Canada, Kroeger says, “Married life’s good. It’s been 94 days.”

And Lavigne insists she picked the right guy this time after previously exchanging vows with Sum 41 star Deryck Whibley, adding, “He’s such a gentleman, actually, that he’s always like, ‘What do you want to see?’ We watched Harry Potter together.”

Kroeger admits it was enjoyable: “It was kinda fun to do the entire series together.”

Talk then turned to the Complicated singer’s kitchen skills. The happy husband says, “I could burn water (but) she’s an amazing cook.”

Modest Lavigne insists, “I just go with the flow and kinda see what’s in the fridge and then start,” prompting her husband to state, “Yeah, but you never miss. I’ve never tasted one thing that you’ve put on the table where I was like, ‘I wish I had a dog’. That’s never happened.”

Little Richard suffers heart attack at home

Rock ‘n’ roll legend Little Richard is recovering after recently suffering a heart attack while at home with his family.

The Tutti Frutti singer, who turned 80 last year (12), reveals he was overcome with a coughing fit and started to feel a shooting pain in his arm and it was only after self-medicating that he started to feel OK.

His doctor later advised him that he had suffered a heart attack, and revealed that he saved his own life with his quick-thinking actions.

During a chat with Cee Lo Green for a Recording Academy fundraiser in Georgia on Sunday (29Sep13), he explained, “The other night, I didn’t know I was having a heart attack. I was coughing, and my right arm was aching. I told my son, ‘Make the room as cold as ice.’ So he turned the air conditioning on, and I took a baby aspirin. The doctor told me that saved my life. Jesus had something for me. He brought me through.”

The veteran entertainer has stepped away from performing since almost collapsing on stage during a gig in Washington, D.C. last summer (Jun12).

Dannii Minogue breaks down on TV following grandmother’s death

Pop star Dannii Minogue broke down in tears on live TV on Sunday night (29Sep13) as she struggled with her grief following the death of her grandmother.

The Put The Needle On It singer is a judge on Australia’s The X Factor and she was visibly moved as she listened to her contestant Dami Im’s performance of Simon & Garfunkel’s classic Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Wiping away tears after the song ended, Minogue said, “I had the roughest week ever. That was for my parents and my grandfather, that song tonight.

“I’ve had the toughest time. You (Im) have been my absolute angel and for anyone else out there who ever had a tough time that is the song, you need to connect the energy of the song.”

The star then shared the reason for her tears on her page, writing, “Dami’s song this week, Bridge Over Troubled Water, was for anyone going through a tough time or anyone who needs to feel a little hope.

“Dami helped me dedicate this performance tonight to my family and my beautiful Grandmother who just recently passed away.”

Eddie Van Halen sues building company for shoddy work

Rocker Eddie Van Halen is suing a building contractor over allegations of shoddy work at his Los Angeles home.

The Van Halen star claims workers left a string of problems in their wake after they were hired to remodel his home in 2008.

In a lawsuit filed on Monday (30Sep13), Van Halen accuses them of causing damage to his roof, chimney, gutters and elevator shaft. The main issue, the suit claims, is a lack of waterproofing, which has caused mold damage throughout the house.

He claims he has paid out more than $1 million ( 666,000) and now is seeking repayment, along with interest.

Nick Carter: ‘Drug binges left me depressed’

Backstreet Boys star Nick Carter regrets his decade-long battle with drugs and alcohol because it led to depression, which he still has to deal with.

Now six years sober, the pop star opens up about the extent of his abuse issues in his new memoir, Facing the Music and Living to Talk About It, revealing that during the height of his problems, he took Ecstasy pills, cocaine and drank a large bottle of vodka a night.

He tells In Touch magazine, “I regret taking Ecstasy. The amount I did caused changes to my brain that are responsible for my bouts of depression now.”

Carter also details his romance with ex-girlfriend Paris Hilton in the book, and admits she was the wrong person for him at the lowest time of his life.

He adds, “(She) fed my worst impulses as far as partying.”

Special delivery for Bruno Mars as Grammy arrives in a pizza box

Bruno Mars’ Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance arrived at the singer’s Hollywood Hills home last month (Aug13) in a pizza box.

Sources tell Life & Style magazine the Grenade singer was stumped when the extra-large Domino’s delivery arrived at his door – because he hadn’t ordered a pizza.

A pal says, “Pizza places give tickets away for his concerts all the time, so he thought maybe someone had sent him a free pizza.

“He was really happy to finally have his Grammy because he worked so hard for it, but it also left him hungry for pizza!”

It is not clear why Grammy bosses chose to send him his official trophy in a pizza box.

Art Brut replace guitarist and drummer on eve of tour

Rockers Art Brut have announced a line-up change on the eve of their latest tour after revealing drummer Mikey Breyer and guitarist Jasper Future have retired from the group.

Blur star Graham Coxon’s guitarist Toby Macfarlaine and Stephen Gilchrist have joined the band as permanent replacements.

Frontman Eddie Argos says, “Being a classic rock band isn’t all just laps of honour round the world and photoshoots in Rolling Stone; it also involves personnel changes. So, after 10 years and eight years of playing with them respectively, we say goodbye to Mike and Jasper.

“Press releases are not the best place for fond farewells but it’s been a blast and we’ll miss them… It’s now time for Art Brut Mk III. Hello to Toby and Stephen.”

The group kicks off a British tour with the new bandmates in Manchester, England next week (24Sep13).

Boxing legend Ken Norton dies

Former U.S. boxing champion Ken Norton has died. He was 70.

The heavyweight fighter passed away at a care facility in Las Vegas on Wednesday (18Sep13) following a series of strokes.

His manager Gene Kilroy says, “I’m sure he’s in heaven now with all the great fighters. I’d like to hear that conversation.”

Beginning his career in the ring during his time in the U.S. Marines, Norton began to fight professionally in 1967.

One of his most famous bouts came in 1973, when he broke Muhammad Ali’s jaw. They met again in 1976 in New York, when Ali won the heavyweight title following a controversial decision.

Norton won a title again in 1977. After he retired, he went on to make a string of film appearances, as well as cameos in TV shows such as The A-Team and Knight Rider, and worked as a fighting pundit.

Paying tribute to the late sports star, fellow former heavyweight Mike Tyson took to, writing, “Today a great man passed away. A legend in the boxing world and a good man. Condolences to Ken Norton’s family on this very sad day.

“Ken Norton was always nice to me even when I was just an amateur fighter. He always treated me like I was somebody. Remarkable man.”

Norton is survived by his five children.

Katherine Jenkins splits from boyfriend – report

Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins is a single lady again after reportedly splitting from her latest boyfriend.

The former Dancing With The Stars contender began dating stockbroker Adam Bidwell, a close friend of British royal Prince Harry, in February (13), but they have decided to go their separate ways.

According to Britain’s Daily Mirror, the pair’s relationship became strained after Bidwell began spending more time in the gym shaping up for an upcoming charity boxing match.

A source tells the tabloid, “Adam has been training really hard for this boxing match and has been really under the cosh (under pressure) at work. It was Katherine’s decision but she still loves Adam and will continue to support him as a friend. Despite this she is incredibly sad and feeling pretty raw – splitting up is always painful.”

The romance was Jenkins’ first since she called off her engagement to Welsh TV host Gethin Jones in December 2011.
