Arsenal Transfer News: Barcelona Rebuff Javier Mascherano Enquiry

8 Oct

Arsenal’s dramatic deadline day has seen them declare interest in another La Liga superstar in Javier Mascherano, although don’t expect him to follow Mesut Ozil any time soon.

According to The Express, The Gunners had lodged an enquiry with Barcelona concerning the availability of their defensive lynchpin but have seen their efforts shot down by the Catalan club.

After a summer of frustration at the Emirates Arsenal have been active on deadline day and set to soon smash their transfer record with the 42.4 million signing of Mesut Ozil.

Wenger is apparently also in pursuit of Demba Ba and has made enquiries about Paris Saint-Germain’s Javier Pastore, but last week’s signing of Mathieu Flamini aside, there has been little activity concerning defensive players until now.

But regardless of ambition, Barcelona appear to have made it clear that their Argentine international is not for sale, meaning Wenger will have to look elsewhere if he wishes to bolster the defensive ambitions, something which is surely a priority for the Frenchman following the sidelining of Mikel Arteta with a torn quadricep.

Man Utd Transfer News: Cesc Fabregas’s Barca Future Uncertain?

13 Aug

Cesc Fabregas

Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas is considering his future in the wake of two bids from Barclay’s Premier League champions Manchester United, according to Team Talk.

The Catalans have spoken publicly about their reluctance to sell Fabregas while former United defender Gerard Pique has told his old club they are “wasting their time”.

However, the final decision on the former Arsenal captain’s future could be accelerated by the appointment of Gerardo Martino as the successor to illness-stricken Tito Vilanova, who has stepped down.

United’s initial offer for Fabregas, which came last week, was knocked back by the Spanish champions though the Red Devils made a second offer of 30 million plus add-ons earlier this week.

Reports in Spain on Monday however claimed that offer was also rejected by Barca, while Pique, who spent four years at Old Trafford between 2004 and 2008, has told his former employers to abandon their pursuit.

The centre back told The Sun:

“United are wasting their time. It took a long time for Cesc to get his dream move back home and he won’t give it up.

“This is home. It is where his family is, and he is playing with his closest friends. He has told us he is happy and that he intends to stay with Barcelona.”

Fabregas left Barcelona’s famed youth academy La Maisa in 2003 and joined United’s domestic rivals Arsenal as a 16-year-old. He later developed into one of the club’s key players and became captain in November 2008.

He spent eight seasons in North London, making over 300 appearances and providing 100 assists, and won the FA Cup with the Gunners in 2005 following their victory over United on penalties – the last time Arsenal won a trophy.

Barcelona 6-1 Getafe – Video Highlights Of All Goals

21 Mar

A rare midday kick-off in Spain saw Barcelona continue their dominance in La Liga with a scarily comfortable 6-1 win over Getafe at the Nou Camp.

Goals for Alexis Sanchez, Lionel Messi, Andreas Iniesta (who was the undeniable man of the match, setting up both those former scorers), David Villa, Christian Tello and a late finish for Gerard Pique saw Barca home without too much trouble in the sunshine.

A second half consolation goal for Getafe from substitute Alvaro didn’t dampen any jubilation for the hosts, as they now move a whopping 12 points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, who face Rayo Vallecano later on today. It was also another case for Barcelona that whatever Real Madrid can do, the Catalans can do better. Madrid, thanks to a hat trick from Cristiano Ronaldo and another from Karim Benzema saw the current La Liga Champions put Sevilla to the sword with a 4-1 victory on Saturday night, only for Tito Vilanova’s men to go two goals better at the Nou Camp.
