James Bond Will Be Back November 2015, Sam Mendes Will Direct

1 May

The 24th Bond film will come roaring into theaters November 2015, unless you’re Kate Middleton (hey gurl) who will get to see it in October with little Her Royal Highness, Princess Katniss of Cambridge, who will be two years old by then.

Vulture reports that Sam Mendes will be back to direct the next movie, as will Daniel Craig. Mendes had previously announced that he wouldn’t be able to direct Bond 24, due to his commitments to theatrical productions of King Lear and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. However, given the enormous success of the Mendes-helmed Skyfall, producers were willing to wait and Mendes will be back, with the film set for a November 6, 2015 release date (October 23 in the U.K.). Mendes said:

I am very pleased that by giving me the time I need to honour all my theatre commitments, the producers have made it possible for me to direct Bond 24. I very much look forward to taking up the reins again, and to working with Daniel Craig, Michael G. Wilson, and Barbara Broccoli for a second time.

We’ll miss you, Judi Dench.

12 Iconic Movie Characters Who Aren’t As Cool As You Remember

11 Mar

Back To The Future 1

Universal Pictures

We’re an easily impressionable sort of bunch, us film fans. We watch movies and if there’s a character who is slightly handsome, who is wearing a nice jacket, or is often seen shooting a gun, we instantly aspire to be like them – an act which can even lead us to modelling our looks on them. You know: getting our hair cut the same way, buying similar clothes and memorabilia that will let everyone else know that we’re a fan of this movie and its awesome character…

But then most of us grow up. We still love these characters, but if we think rationally and maturely for a second and scratch away the thin surface, we can see that these characters aren’t cool. Not in the long run, at least. They may have their fifteen minutes of fame but if they keep on going at the same rate that they have been going throughout the film after the end credits have finished rolling they’re going to grow sad, old and alone.

Sorry to put a downer on things, but following is a list of 12 iconic film characters who aren’t as cool as we all remember them to be – the sort of characters who – if we knew in real life – we would give them a slap and tell them to get it together… and maybe even tell their parents about their idiotic behaviour, too (well, if we were so daring).

7 Awesome Actors Whose Talents Were Wasted On Awful James Bond Villains

24 Dec

hugo_drax_michael_lonsdale_moonraker

A problem with many movies of the action genre is the over writing of villains. The story needs a villain, but writers sometimes don’t know were to stop writing. Sometimes the writer just puts in the most generic things he can think of as filler and then forgets about it. You would think that a celebrated franchise like James Bond would make sure their villains weren’t one of these. Well you’d think wrong. While there are some beautifully acted and written villains in Bond film history, there are also the actors who were unfortunate enough to get the scripts that even Brando couldn’t make work. The following are a few such roles I wish were just written a little bit better, because in all cases the actor who is playing the part could have made these villains some of the greatest in the Bond franchise. But alas, they were never given any help in doing so.

I would also like to make clear that I love the James Bond franchise. Which is why I hold them in such high regard.

So here are the 7 villains who weren’t up to par with the rest, due to no fault of the actors who played them…

7. Robert Carlyle As Renard – The World Is Not Enough (1999)

Renard Die Another Day

Here is a villain who could have been interesting. From the build up in the pre-credit sequence in the bankers office, you are led to believe he made sure Bond is able to get the money to London with help from the sniper. That way Sir King will get the money and it will kill him. Thus showing forethought and intelligence. Then to try and show him to be more than even that, they throw in the bullet in the brain that will eventually kill him. He is unable to feel pain. Who gives a flying f**k?! He is the bad guy. Can’t you give him a better reason for being the bad guy?

I know a few people with concussions and brain trauma from rock climbing accidents. They aren’t evil a**holes. Yes, some of them can be a**holes at times, but they usually think they’re being funny cause you fell for the old shaving cream in your sleeping bag bit. It was a $100 sleeping bag. I bought it especially for the trip cause it was going to be bum f**k cold in February in the Cascade Mountains. Bunch of a**holes. Anyway, I digress.

Renard had the potential, much like some of the others on this list, to be a good villain. But the writers tried too hard to make the plot what they wanted and not what the film needed. They made Elektra King into the mastermind, leaving Renard in the thug category. They took away all that they had built for his character and stripped him down to a henchman. They turned him into the leather jacket wearing rebel who falls in love and helps the rich bitch get revenge on daddy.

Robert Carlyle was not bad in his portrayal, but an actor can only do so much with what they are given in the script. The writers didn’t know where to stop and wrote Renard into dust. The climactic battle at the end doesn’t feel emotionally charged like it should have. Bond had killed the mastermind, Elektra King, already. Renard in the end becomes a disappointing bookend, in a lackluster bond film. One that could have been- should have been- better.

Bond 24: 8 Classic Characters That Should Be Reintroduced In Next Movie

9 Jul

blofeld

Throughout the first three Daniel Craig James Bond films, crucial characters have been slowly re-introduced back in to the franchise, starting with Bond’s CIA agent ally Felix Leiter in Casino Royale (along with Judi Dench reprising M) and most recently in Skyfall Q, Moneypenny, and the more traditional male M (Ralph Fiennes’ Gareth Mallory). This has been part of the fun of the new Bond films, as well a sign of the liberty the producers have in this new continuity to reinvent classic characters.

The question now remains, what other characters from the previous Bond films could make their way back in to the franchise, and what form would they take? This article will focus on several characters from the franchise’s past that would be fascinating to revisit, and how they could be re-imagined for this new continuity. And don’t worry, Christmas Jones will not be on this list.

8. Alec Trevelyan

alec

Alec Trevelyan is a former 00 agent alongside Bond, as well his friend, in GoldenEye (1995). He faked his own death during a mission with Bond and nine years later returned, revealing himself as the man behind the theft of the Russian spaced based weapon, GoldenEye. Trevelyan plans to steal billions of dollars from the Bank of England and then use GoldenEye to eliminate the financial records, concealing the theft and throwing England’s economy in to turmoil. All this is in revenge for this parents being betrayed by the British during WWII because they were Lienz Cossacks.

Trevelyan was one of Bond’s most personal battles due to their former friendship and presumed shared patriotism. In reintroducing Trevelyan back in to the franchise, it’d be interesting to show us the early days of Bond and Trevelyan’s friendship- even make a film where the two work together on a mission. The film could still use the Lienz Cossacks backstory- though it’d probably make more sense for it to be Trevelyan’s grandparents than parents- and hint at his eventual turn to the dark side, a la Anakin Skywalker. It’d also be a great opportunity to show us a little more of the 00 branch and what the other agents are like in the field- especially how another 00 agent would react to Bond’s womanizing nature.

James Bond: 10 Most Deadly Bond Girls

27 Feb

bond girls

Over the course of the 23 official James Bond films that have been released over the years, there have been a wide array of exciting locations, vehicles, villains and, of course, gadgets. But what would Bond be without his Bond girls? That’s a rhetorical question, but the answer is somewhat obvious – he’d be nowhere.

So as Bond girls are such an important aspect of the series, and there are plenty of articles questioning who the ‘best’ or the ‘sexiest’ Bond girl is, it feels like time to bring a slightly different spin to the debate, and decide who the most dangerous Bond girls are up to this point in the series. So to celebrate the girls who have made attempts at seducing Bond into their beds, or just plain tried to kill him, read on and see who the deadliest Bond Girls really are…

Honourable Mention: Bambi And Thumper – Lola Larson and Trina Parks – Diamonds Are Forever

Bambi + Thumper

Bambi and Thumper are the two bodyguards of Willard Whyte, and quickly get the better of Bond when he enters the house where he believes he will find Mr. Whyte, using their athleticism to subdue Bond with vicious jumps and kicks. Bambi then attempts to choke Bond using her thighs, perfect setting the path for a much later villain in the series who I’ll get to later on, although Bond escapes this situation easily enough, only for the two women to throw him into the outdoor pool.

The only reason Bambi and Thumper have only made it as far as the honourable mention rather than into the top 10 is due to how easily Bond gets the upper hand over them both when they jump into the pool themselves to finish him off. When Felix Leiter turns up Bond is holding each of them underwater, letting Thumper loose and eventually Bambi after learning the location of Mr. Whyte.

There’s also the problem that there are two of them, and it seems almost impossible to seperate them, they are Bambi and Thumper after all, so they unfortunately just miss out on the top 10, but are no less deadly for it.
