Happy Birthday, Mr. President

27 Jul

It’s no secret that President Barack Obama has a lot of friends in Hollywood.

Leading up to the big election last November, dozens of famous faces took part in campaign rallies, concerts and fundraisers (all hail Beyonce and Jay Z) to support the president’s bid for a second term.

On Sunday, Obama turns 52 years young, and in honor of his birthday, Celebuzz is taking a look at some of the stars the P.O.T.U.S. has rubbed shoulders with.

According to The Associated Press, the commander in chief will be spending part of his birthday at Camp David in Maryland before returning to the White House in the afternoon.

Obama will travel to the west coast this week to visit troops at Camp Pendleton, discuss plans to help homeowners and drop by The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for an appearance on Aug. 6.

‘Stand Your Ground’ Florida Boycott List Naming Rihanna, Kanye West, Jay Z Refuted

28 Jun

Stevie Wonder might be the only man who’s still boycotting Florida after all.

As Celebuzz previously reported, American Urban Radio Network White House correspondent April Ryan leaked a list of A-list musicians – including Rihanna, Kanye West and Madonna – allegedly boycotting the sunshine State in protest of its “Stand Your Ground” law in the wake of George Zimmerman‘s acquittal for the 2012 killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

On Tuesday, Ryan updated her original story saying “several representatives of the artists named who say, on behalf of their clients, they are uncomfortable being identified on that list,” refuting the claims that the named celebrities are stopping their performances in Florida.

“The list including her name was surprising,” a source close to Alicia Keys, whose name was also on the roster, told us. “We are not aware of any boycott.”

In similar fashion, listed artists Jay Z and Timberlake are still slated to perform at Miami’s Sun Life Stadium on August 13.

Celebuzz has reached out to all the named musicians for comments and is currently awaiting for replies.

Jay Z Gets Meditative With Justin Timberlake in His ‘Holy Grail’ Music Video

6 Jan

Jay Z‘s “Holy Grail” music video is one big metaphor that reads: fame can be a road to ruin.

The clip begins with just Jay, sitting among scattered sculptures in a sparely-furnished space, dimly-lit by candelabras, with a butler waiting for his beckon call in the wings, meditating on a Mike Tyson boxing match, which is playing on stacked old-school box TVs.

Then a scruffily-bearded Justin Timberlake shows up singing – first in a room, where underwear-clad women, wrapped in sheets, writhe on chairs, then in front of a car engulfed in flames.

It comes to a close after a carefully-balanced tower of champagne glasses comes crashing down.

In all, “Holy Grail” is an artful, grandiose visual experience from genius director Anthony Mandler. The Timberlake-featuring song, which has stayed in the top 10 since Magna Carta Holy Grail dropped, is slightly remixed for the video, with parts slowed down and JT’s intro being pushed back to after the first verse.

Watch the video, which first premiered on Jay’s Facebook, above. Lyrics for the song are now on Directlyrics.

Beyonce and Jay Z Show Their Support for Trayvon Martin at NYC Rally

17 Aug

The king and queen of music had one name on their minds Saturday morning: Trayvon Martin.

One week after a Florida jury acquitted George Zimmerman of murder and manslaughter charges, Beyonce Knowles and Jay Z joined protestors in New York City to kick off a nationwide rally in support of the slain teenager.

Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton was also at Manhattan rally, along with Rev. Al Sharpton.

“Justice for Trayvon” rallies took place in some 100 cities across the country.

The day before, Beyonce asked her fans to sign a petition asking the Department of Justice to open a civil rights cast against Zimmerman.

“We are still struggling with the issue of inequality and the lack of value for a black man’s life. Trayvon Martin’s most basic civil right, the right to live, was violated,” she wrote on her website.

“We have made so much progress and cannot allowed hatred and racism to divide us. When we all join together, people of all races, we have the power to change the world we live in.”

More than 588,000 people have signed the petition so far.

Rihanna, Jay Z, Kanye West Join Stevie Wonder’s Florida Boycott Following George Zimmerman Verdict: Report

14 Aug

UPDATE: New information have come to light that many artists named in the list are not part of or have never heard of the boycott. More information on the matter could be found here in Celebuzz’s coverage.

Florida concert ticket sales may be plummeting soon.

Performers such as Rihanna, Jay-Z Jay Z, Kanye West, Justin Timberlake and Madonna have reportedly decided to follow Stevie Wonder’s footsteps in boycotting Florida in protest of the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law. April Ryan of American Urban Radio Network first broke the news, crediting “a source close to Wonder” for leaking a list of A-listers who’ve vowed to not perform at the Sunshine State in the wake of George Zimmerman‘s acquittal for the 2012 killing of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin.

Wonder earlier announced his intention to boycott any state with “Stand Your Ground” laws after a jury found Zimmerman – who police did not arrest weeks after the killing due to the law – not guilty of second-degree murder. The “Stand Your Ground” defense also appeared in instructions to jurors during the trial.

“I decided today that until the Stand Your Ground law is abolished in Florida, I will never perform there again,” Wonder said during a concert in Canada earlier this month. “As a matter of fact, wherever I find that law exists, I will not perform in that state or in that part of the world.”

According to Ryan, other notable celebs on the boycott list include Usher, Alicia Keys, The Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart and will.i.am.

Jay Z and his wife, Beyonce, also showed their support for Martin, appearing at a recent rally in New York City to support the slain teenager’s family.
