Liverpool Transfer News: Mamadou Sakho, Victor Moses & Thiago Ilori Deals Complete

6 Jul

Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool have started deadline day in exciting fashion with a huge triple deal as confirmed by Liverpoolfc.com.

The Merseyside club had already been busy this summer with five incomings but have now taken the total with eight with the arrivals of Victor Moses on loan from Chelsea, Mamadou Sakho from PSG and Tiago Ilori from Sporting Lisbon.

Moses is set to bring even more talent to an attacking line up that already includes Suarez, Sturridge and Coutinho. Moses made 23 league appearances for Chelsea last season but is not in the plans of Jose Mourinho.

Sakho will bring huge amounts of defensive experience and quality. Sakho may just be 23 but he already has 14 caps for France and is a strong player comfortable on the ball who made over 150 league appearances for PSG where he came through the youth team.

Ilroi is only twenty and while he will bring more cover for the centre of defensive is very much seen as one for the future and only ever made twelve appearances for the Portuguese club.

This could spell the end of Liverpool’s incomings however outgoings could happen with rumours linking Fabio Borini with Sunderland.

Liverpool Transfer News: Luis Suarez Demands Arsenal Talks

10 May

Suarez

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has asked for permission to hold talks with Arsenal over a summer move to the Emirates, according to the BBC.

The unsettled Uruguayan believed the Gunner’s offer last night of 40,000,001 triggers the release clause inserted in his contract at Anfield, allowing him to speak to his suitors.

Liverpool however see things differently, and rejected Arsenal’s offer outright, though Suarez will inform manager Brendan Rodgers that he intends to speak with the Londoners.

The Reds have now turned down two bids from Arsenal, who made an opening offer of 30 million on July 8.

The Gunner’s resolve to sign Suarez comes as one-time target Gonzalo Higuain edges toward a move from Real Madrid to Napoli, and Arsene Wenger will now invest all his efforts in capturing the Liverpool marksman instead.

Real also retain an interest in Suarez, but have thus far stopped short of making an offer.

Following Arsenal’s most recent approach for the forward, Liverpool owner John Henry’s Twitter page read: “What do you think they’re smoking over there at Emirates?”

It is unclear if the American was referring to the Gunner’s attempts to sign Suarez or their valuation of the player. Red’s manager Brendan Rodgers recently suggested he values Suarez closer to the 55 million mark.

Should Arsenal persist and have an improved offer for Suarez accepted, it would come close to trebling the club’s transfer record – the 15 million paid to Zenit Saint Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin in January 2009.

Arsenal Transfers: 5 Reasons Why Luis Suarez Is More Hassle Than He’s Worth

9 May

Luis Suarez

This month has seen unsettled Liverpool striker Luis Suarez subjected to two bids from Arsenal.

The first, which came on July 8, stood at 30 million and was swiftly rejected by the Merseyside club.

The second, which came in last night, saw the Gunners increase their bid by 10 million as they lodged a 40 million offer, which was also rejected.

However, today, the Uruguayan striker, who finished last season as the second-highest goalscorer in the Premier League, told his club that he wants talks with Arsenal.

The Londoners are desperate to sign Suarez having missed out on Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli, and manager Arsene Wenger is determined to bring in at least one “big name” this summer to appease long-suffering Gooners.

The French manager is likely to have to up his bidding somewhat however, as Rodgers values his prized asset at 55 million, claiming he’s worth just as much as Edinson Cavani.

In actuality, Suarez is in fact a liability.

Arsenal would be mad to part with that amount for a player who has more baggage than an airport conveyor belt, and here, we take a look at 5 Reasons Why Luis Suarez Is More Hassle Than He’s Worth.

Liverpool 5-1 Norwich City: Rodgers Compares Suarez with Messi & Ronaldo, Hughton Upset With Gifted Opportunities

Brendan Rodgers praised the spectacular performance tonight from Luis Suarez after witnessing his star striker scored four goals against Norwich City by comparing the Uruguayan with world greats Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Northern Irishman had just witnessed his side romp to a 5-1 victory against the over-matched Canaries, and was clearly thrilled by the top-drawer performance Suarez gave to the Anfield faithful.

The former Ajax man now tops the Premier League scoring charts after his haul tonight, which saw him hit his third hat-trick against the Canaries in four matches. Rodgers said:

“Messi and Ronaldo have had a few years, it’s all about the numbers and what they produce. Suarez is only 26 and he’s still got improvements. Put him on the pitch and you know you’re going to get the determination to succeed. I feel for the Norwich defenders.”

“Look at Suarez, the goals he scored and the assist he’s made tonight. The vision and the dip to get it over the keeper in the first goal, his second goal is great improvisation to get in front of the keeper.”

“Then his third goal. I’ve watched it back and I just thought ‘goodness me how good was that?’ The free-kick doesn’t surprise me, he practices them all the time.”

Rodgers also went on to talk about how happy the striker currently is at the club, contrary to the pre-season’s ugly spat which saw the striker accuse his manager of being deceptive and breaking promises.

Apparently those days of ill-feeling are gone, with Rodgers looking forward to Suarez bagging goals for the long haul. He said:

“He’s happiest he’s been here. He wants to train, he’s out everyday. His best years are going to be here.”

“You can see it’s a handy glove fit for him. The football we play works well for his style but you’ve still got to be there to finish it off.”

Speaking shortly afterwards, Norwich manager Chris Hughton was also very complimentary to Liverpool’s number 7 but felt the magical performance was mainly a result of lax defending.

Understandably disappointed with the way the goals came about, he said:

“He’s a world class player. If you afford him that much space and time he’s one person who has the ability to do what he did today.”

“I’m disappointed that we gave him too much space and time, we gave him opportunities that he took. We could have done more to stop him having the day that he has had today.”

The former Newcastle manager was particularly upset with the second goal that his side conceded, chastising his defenders for not preventing what he deemed was easily preventable effort. He added:

“Players have responsibilities from set plays and you have to hope they’re resilient enough to stay with their men. The second goal is the one that really hurts, it’s a soft goal.”

He also defended his selection choices, as questions were raised as to why Gary Hooper started the game on the bench. Hughton said:

“I decided to go with a 4-3-3 today. Gary is someone that performs better when he has someone close with him and I thought Elmander would give us more running beyond the man.”

Liverpool’s win ensures they maintain their fourth place position and keep up with the Champions League race, while Norwich are just three points above the relegation zone and looking precarious, just four points above the feared 18th place.

Liverpool Transfer News: Real Madrid ‘Convinced’ They Will Sign Luis Suarez

12 Feb

Real Madrid are ‘convinced’ Luis Suarez will be their player next season after making the Liverpool striker their number one transfer target, according to the Evening Standard.

Suarez’s four-goal heroics against Norwich in the Premier League last night exemplified exactly why he is currently one of the hottest prospects in European football and why Real want him so badly.

Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti and president Florentino Perez have agreed that signing the Uruguayan should be their top priority in the transfer market amid doubts over the future of Karim Benzema.

The Spanish giants are also wary of a fresh approach from Arsenal, who bid 1 over 40 million for Suarez over the summer, and will do what it takes to beat Arsene Wenger’s side to the 26-year-old’s signature.

Ancelotti believes a front three consisting of Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Suarez would be an unstoppable combination and, as they did with Bale, Real are prepared to pay what it takes to make that happen.

It would likely take a bid of up to 45 million in order for the dream triumvirate to come to fruition, though high-ranking Bernabeu officials have started talking openly at how convinced they are Suarez will eventually swap Merseyside for Madrid.

The La Liga club haven’t ruled out a January bid, though a summer move is considered more likely, and the Spaniards are becoming increasingly more confident Suarez will be theirs by next season.

Liverpool Transfer News: Willian Wants Anfield Move

9 Sep

Willian

Liverpool are leading the race to sign Anzhi Makhachkala star Willian after the player reportedly claimed he would be keen on a move to Anfield, reports TeamTalk.

The 25-year-old Brazilian international ace has admitted his preference to move to England should he leave the Russian league in this transfer window and that he would welcome a move to Merseyside.

Manchester City reportedly tried to sign Willian from his previous club Shakhtar Donetsk prior to his big money move to Anzhi, while both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are regularly talked about as admirers of his talent.

Though his quotes to ESPN Brazil would suggest it would be Liverpool that would be his prference;

Kerimov told us that Anzhi won’t make further investments…Russian players will join and foreign players would be free to go,” Willian is quoted as saying on ESPN Brazil.

“He made it clear that if good bids arrive, close to what he paid for the players, that he would certainly help us go.

“There was the Manchester City bid that was turned down. Now I’m waiting for a new bid to arrive in the next days from a few clubs, like Liverpool.

“If it’s really Liverpool, then it is surely a great club. I’m hopeful and very calm, just waiting for the best.

“England is my goal. I like the Premier League very much, I enjoy English football and certainly, if that happens, it will be very good for me and for my image.

“I know there have been some talks, but I don’t know the values, the agent didn’t tell me, he just said there were talks with some clubs, he didn’t name them, but I think they are Engl

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has been on the hunt for a marquee signing all summer as doubts over Luis Suarez’s future on Merseyside continue to make the back pages. A recent attempt to sign Atletico Madrid striker Diego Costa in a huge 22 million move was rebuffed when the player signed a new deal at the Spanish club but these quotes from Willian could lead to him making an audacious bid for the Brazilian before the transfer window shuts in September.

Liverpool vs West Brom: Team News, Match Preview & Line-Ups

29 Mar

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Date: Monday 11th February
  • Kick-Off: 8pm

Team News

Ahead of the game, there’s a question mark hanging over Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, who was forced to pull out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil at Wembley thanks to a thigh problem, and will be assessed. Brendan Rodgers will no doubt hope for the kind of miraculous recovery that allows Manchester United and Arsenal’s injured international players to suddenly perk up after a friendly they were supposed to play is over.

Raheem Sterling, who also pulled out of the squad, is also fit, while Rodgers might welcome new Brazilian signing Philippe Coutinho into his first team, after his first week of training. He may need some time after a delayed start to his Liverpool career.

West Brom will be without left-back Goran Popov who begins a three-match suspension for spitting at Tottenham defender Kyle Walker, but midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is in contention to return after a knee injury that has sidelined him since New Year’s day.

There’s no news yet on the role (if any) want-away striker Peter Odemwingie might play, after he became the butt of all transfer window jokes thanks to the collapse of a last minute deadline day move to QPR, who definitely had nothing to do with his appearance at the ground.

Match Preview

Brendan Rodgers welcomes former Liverpool assistant manager Steve Clarke back to Anfield, and will be looking to avenge his team’s opening day defeat by West Brom. That day went particularly poorly for Liverpool, with both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel at fault for the display, but Rodgers will hope his defence is stronger this time out.

Jamie Carragher is likely to start for Liverpool, despite announcing his intention to retire at the end of the season, against skipper Steven Gerrard’s wishes, according to the MailOnline.

If Liverpool are serious about trying to come fourth this season, they will need to start picking up more points immediately, with the team currently sitting in 8th place. West Brom meanwhile have enjoyed a good season, and are just two points behind Liverpool in ninth, though their form in recent weeks has been wobbly.

They will hope they can emulate last season’s shock 1-0 result at Anfield to leapfrog the Reds and get their own season back on track.

Likely Line-Ups

Liverpool: Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Enrique; Henderson, Lucas; Sturridge, Gerrard, Downing; Su rez.

West Brom: Foster; Reid, McAuley, Olsson, Jones; Dorrans, Mulumbu, Morrison, Brunt; Lukaku, Long.

Referee: Jon Moss.
