Matches between title contenders fall into two categories, it seems – matches that have a profound, some say devastating effect on the title race, even two games in, or ones where not much happens, not much changes, and everyone lives to fight another day. The first match between title rivals this season fell very much into the latter category.

Still, there plenty of interest for football enthusiasts, starting right from the team selections (more on that later) to the substitutions and then into ‘Moyes time’, which rather appropriately enough considering the differing personalities of the incumbent and his predecessor, there was no real last gasp excitement.

Here are five things we learnt…

Manchester United are famously a club who don’t start playing well until the second half of the season. But as we approach the New Year, it is going to take something truly special for the Red Devils to successfully defend their Premier League title.

The English champions are a giant ten points adrift of league leaders Arsenal, while even a spot in the top four, and with it, Champions League football next season, looks iffy.

They said there would be a period of transition at Old Trafford when the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson retired, to be replaced by David Moyes, but even his successor wouldn’t have feared things would be this rough.

A poor pre-season campaign was swiftly followed by a dire period of inactivity in the summer transfer window and a worst ever start to a Premier League season for the Reds.

Eighth in the table, evidently, Moyes is going to have to splash the cash in the New Year and overhaul his squad of flops if he is to have even the remotest of hopes in salvaging his maiden season in charge.

And here, we take a look at 5 January Signings To Get United Back Into The Title Race.

Man Utd 0-1 Everton: Roberto Martinez Praises Mentality After Historic Win

13 Feb

Roberto Martinez has praised Everton’s mentality after his side beat Manchester United to win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1992.

The Toffee’s stunned the defending English champions when Bryan Oviedo popped up with an 86th minute clincher to end United’s seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

The result leaves David Moyes – who was facing his former side for the first time since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson – and his side ninth in the table and a whopping 12 points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

And Martinez credited his side’s ability to overcome a mental block having not won here in 21 years.

He said:

“Today was more than a football game for us, it was trying to get over a mental block, it’s been twenty-odd years since we won at Old Trafford, so you can imagine that it wasn’t about the three points or winning, today was about being able to be ourselves, and making sure we push each other to do that, and I couldn’t be prouder in that sense.”

Everton at times found themselves under pressure against United, with the Red Devils unfortunate not to have scored on a number of occasions, with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck hitting the woodwork.

And Martinez admitted it was by no means a perfect performance from his side, in spite of the victory.

He continued:

“The performance was by no means our best performance this season, I think we’ve played a lot better in the campaign but today, we had a real mentality in the first half when Manchester United created a few chances but we never felt inferior, we always kept doing what we’re good at, we created many open chances as well which is always hard to do and, overall, I couldn’t be prouder of the mentality of the players.”

There’s no time to rest on their laurels, with Everton’s next Premier League game coming away to Arsenal at the weekend, but based off this performance, they should have nothing to fear.

Joseph Dempsey was reporting live from Old Trafford.

Man Utd Transfer News: David Moyes To Sell FOUR Flops In January?

3 Jan

Manchester United manager David Moyes is set to wield the axe in the New Year and could sell as many as four under-performing stars, according to the International Business Times.

Moyes has watched on as the side he inherited from Sir Alex Ferguson crashed to their worst start to a league season since 1989, winning just four of their opening nine Premier League games.

And now, the former Everton boss is set to come down hard on his flops in the January transfer window, with the futures of defender Rafael and midfield trio Anderson, Ashley Young and Nani all believed to be under threat.

Portuguese winger Nani has made five league appearances this term but has yet to make a serious impact following a season in which he fell down the pecking order under former manager Ferguson.

Fellow wide man Young has also been criticised for a series of inadequate performances in recent weeks, and has evoked the wrath of critics for his penchant for diving.

The 28-year-old has so far failed to live up to the form he enjoyed at Aston Villa that persuaded United to pay 17 million for his services two seasons ago.

Another misfiring midfielder who fans won’t be surprised to learn faces an uncertain future is Anderson, with the Brazilian struggling for form and fitness for a number of seasons now.

Should he leave, Moyes will almost certainly make fresh approaches for a new central midfielder, having gone in for Cesc Fabregas and Ander Herrera in the last window.

One surprising name on the list however is Anderson’s Brazilian compatriot Rafael, who was first-choice right-back under Ferguson’s era but has struggled with injuries for much of the current campaign.

However, there is competition for his place in the starting XI, with Chris Smalling and Phil Jones able to play in his position, and the 23-year-old may be deemed surplus to requirements.

Should Moyes decide to part company with any of the four, he will almost certainly reinvest the proceeds on new players in January, after being criticised for his inactivity in the market this summer.

Man Utd: 5 Huge Mistakes David Moyes Keeps Making

27 Dec

If you’re looking for Manchester United in the Premier League table this morning, you might be alarmed by the fact you have to scroll all the way down to 8th.

That’s how things stand for the defending champions at present, following their worst ever start to a league campaign that has seen them win just three games all season.

Calamitous defeats against Liverpool, Manchester City and West Brom have interspersed with these unconvincing victories – with the Red Devils perhaps fortunate to leave the Stadium of Light with the three points against Sunderland earlier this month – while yet more points were dropped over the weekend against Southampton.

That leaves them eight points adrift of table-toppers Arsenal – For United, and their manager David Moyes, this simply isn’t good enough.

There was always bound to be a transitional period when Moyes succeeded from the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this year, but even the most pessimistic of United fans wouldn’t have feared it’d be this bad.

The Old Trafford club’s wretched start to the season can be pinned down to a number of reasons – tactical ineptitude from the dugout through to poor performances from the players – but it is Moyes who has to shoulder most of the blame.

Here, we take a look at 5 Huge Mistakes David Moyes Keeps Making.

Man Utd vs Real Sociedad: 5 Big Decisions Moyes Must Get Right

These are tumultuous times for Manchester United.

Last weekend, yet more points were dropped in the Premier League as the defending champions stuttered to a draw over a rejuvenated Southampton, following three defeats in the topflight.

When put together, that equals the Red Devil’s worst ever start to a league campaign, and puts serious pressure on manager David Moyes.

The Scot will attempt to salvage something from the wreckage that is United’s recent form by moving one step closer to qualification to the knock-out stages of the Champions League tomorrow evening.

Spanish outfit Real Sociedad are the visitors, and United will be well aware that this is anything but an easy game, despite the opposition’s recent poor form.

Of their last 12 games against opposition from Spain, Moyes’s men have won only won two games – against Barcelona in April 2008 and Valencia in September 2010.

And so, if fans were hoping for an immediate reaction following the latest set-back in the league, they may have to think twice.

The pressure is on Moyes to deliver here, and one more mistake could prove the catalyst for a worrying slump for the champions.

Ahead of kick-off, the Scot has some important decisions to make, and here, we take a look at 5 he must get right.

Man Utd Transfer News: 3 New January Signings Will Replace Wayne Rooney, Says Ruud Gullit

Manchester United will make three big signings in the January transfer window but could let striker Wayne Rooney leave, according to former Chelsea and Newcastle boss Ruud Gullit.

Speaking to the Express, Gullit claimed United would learn from their mistakes over the summer by strengthening their squad this winter.

The Premier League champions endured a miserable time of things in the last window, with midfielder Marouane Fellaini the only senior arrival at the club under new manager David Moyes.

And Gullit said:

“I can fully understand that Moyes has now asked the board to sanction the purchase of three top-class footballers in the winter to keep the team competing at the highest level in England and Europe.

“I have reason to believe that funds are being made available at United and they should because it is a necessity.”

United’s inactivity over the summer is reflected by their current standing of ninth in the league table having made their worst start to a domestic season since 1989.

And Gullit believes the Red Devils could be set for more upheaval – despite the alleged arrivals of three new stars – by finally allowing striker Rooney to leave.

The England forward was the subject of intense speculation linking him with a move to Chelsea over the summer, with the Blues making two failed bids for the former Everton man.

“When they [United] do buy those three stars, it will be easier to let Wayne Rooney follow his heart if he wants to leave,” Gullit continued.

The 51-year-old Netherlands manager, who has been out of work since being sacked from his last post at Russian side Terek Grozny in 2011, also believes United’s poor start to the season can be partly explained by the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson.

He added:

“They kept basically the same team and squad in the summer, which is why they are inconsistent in the Premier League.

“The club is also struggling to get going without Sir Alex Ferguson. They are missing his presence and his personality.
