Date: Wednesday, December 4 Venue: Emirates Stadium Kick-Off: 19:45

Can Arsenal reassert their dominance at the top of the Premier League when they play host to Hull City in the Premier League on Wednesday, or will the Tigers record another famous win?

Team News

Arsenal will be without Bacary Sagna due to a hamstring injury, with fullback Carl Jenkinson set to replace the Frenchman.

Lukas Podolski is expected back in training this week following a hamstring injury of his own but this match will come too soon for the forward.

Hull will be without Curtis Davies through suspension, meaning James Chester could make only his first appearance since September.

Matty Fryatt is back in the squad after being recalled from his loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday.

Key Stats

Arsenal have won eight of the last nine matches against Hull in all competitions (W8, L1).

Hull were the first team ever to record a comeback victory at the Emirates, doing so in their famous 2-1 victory in September 2008.

The Gunners have taken 36 points from a possible 48 (W11, D3, L2) at home in 2013, including 15 from 18 (W5, L1).

Hull have won just one of their last 30 Premier League away games (W1, D7, L22) – 10 points from a possible 90.

Likely Line-Ups

Arsenal
Szczesny, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs, Ramsey, Flamini, Walcott, Ozil, Rosicky. Giroud.

Hull
McGregor, Elmohamady, Chester, Bruce, Figueroa, Koren, Meyler, Huddlestone, Livermore, Brady, Sagbo.

Arsenal look as though they’re going to stay top of the tree in the run-up to Christmas, but face a busy winter schedule that will test those credentials, starting tonight against Hull.

The visitors come into this game off the back of a sensational 3-1 victory over Liverpool, and will be looking to claim another scalp at the Emirates.

Since promotion, Steve Bruce’s side have shown the pluck and steely determination needed to survive in this league – and they will need to show those qualities tonight if they are to take anything off Arsenal.

The Gunners too are in a good run of form, impressively beating Cardiff 3-0 at the weekend – no mean feat, that – just ask Manchester City and United, who both floundered in Wales.

Arsenal have won eight of the last nine matches against Hull in all competitions and I expect that streak to continue here – though Hull may not be tamed as easily as the Bluebirds were at the weekend.

Prediction
2-0

Date: Tuesday, October 1 Venue: Arena Nationala Kick-Off: 19:45

Chelsea take on Steaua Bucharest in the Champions League tonight knowing another defeat could lead to a second group stage elimination in two years.

Team News

Steaua Bucharest manager Laurentiu Reghecampf is sweating over the fitness of Mihail Pintili and Cristian Tanase as he prepares to welcome Chelsea to the Arena Nationala in Tuesday night’s Group E Champions League clash.

Both will face late fitness tests ahead of kick off.

Chelsea will be without Eden Hazard and Kevin de Bruyne, while Marco Van Ginkel is out for the rest of the season.

Michael Essien has also not travelled, though Fernando Torres is eligible as his domestic ban following his red card against Tottenham at the weekend does not carry over into European competition.

(Sky Sports)

Key Stats

This will be the first competitive meeting between the two sides.

No Romanian club has ever scored more than one goal against English opposition in the Champions League (eight games).

Chelsea have won only two of their last 10 Champions League games away from home (three draws, five defeats).

Jos Mourinho has failed to win his last three Champions Leage games with Chelsea (one draw, two defeats).

Likely Line-Ups

Steaua Bucharest
Tatarusanu, Georgievski, Szukala, Gardos, Latovlevici, Pintilii, Bourceanu, Popa, Stanciu, Tanase, Kapetanos

Chelsea
Cech, Ivanovic, Luiz, Terry, Cole, Lampard, Mikel, Ramires, Oscar, Schurrle, Torres

Almost one year ago, Chelsea were eliminated from the Champions League, becoming the first defending champions to exit in the group stage of the famous club competition.

That resulted in the sacking of boss Roberto Di Matteo and returning manager Jose Mourinho must therefore be feeling a little hot under the collar, with the Blues slumping to a 2-1 defeat to Basel two weeks ago.

Chelsea are sitting bottom of Group E alongside tonight’s opponents and both are without a win after Bucharest lost to Schalke in matchday one of the tournament.

Both therefore will be going all out to secure those vital three points tonight.

This is the first ever encounter between the two sides, but Chelsea have a few statistical advantages in that no Romanian side has ever scored more than one goal against English opposition in the Champions League.

That being said, Mourinho has failed to win his last three games in the Champions League with Chelsea, drawing once and losing twice.

If these two sides are to avoid being cut adrift in Group E, one of those statistics probably has to end tonight.

Arsenal vs Aston Villa – Match Preview

8 Sep

1280px-Arsenal_vs_Sunderland,_18_August_2012,_Pre_match_7

The bookies make Arsenal strong favorites to win this game but, I have a feeling this could be very tight.

Although Arsenal have had a reasonable pre season culminating in a 3-1 victory over Man City there is sure to be a hint of unrest over the lack of any, as promised, marquee signings.

Aston Villa on the other hand seemed to have invested wisely during the window with numbers and experience being added to the squad. This being topped off with Paul Lambert persuading star striker Christian Benteke to stick with the Villain’s for at least another season.

From the outside I see Villa progressing this season and finishing in the top ten, would be interested if their fans would be satisfied with that progress and a run in one of the cups. I won’t mention Bradford if you don’t!

I think there will be goals in this with both teams looking stronger offensively rather than defensively and with my Arsenal head I am tipping the Gunners to edge it by the odd goal.

Prediction: Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa

Likely Line-ups

Arsenal

Arsene Wenger is expected to stick with his conventional 4-3-3 formation.

Schezney

Sanga, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Gibbs

Arteta, Ramsey, Wilshere

Walcott, Giroud, Carzorla

Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is also likely to opt for 4-3-3, as he has done in Pre-Season

Tottenham vs Lyon – Team News, Match Preview & Likely Line-Ups

24 Apr

Friedel

  • Date: Thursday, 14th February
  • Venue: White Hart Lane
  • K/o: 20:05

Team News

Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will not face his former team as Spurs host Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.

Brad Friedel will start in goal against the French club, while Emmanuel Adebayor will lead the line up front in the absence of the injured Jermain Defoe, who misses out with an ankle injury.

Long-term absentees Sandro and Younes Kaboul remain out, but the latter should be available again for the second leg in a fortnight.

Tom Huddlestone is ruled out with a minor knee injury but new signing Lewis Holtby could start.

Lyon have no fresh injury concerns and Former AC Milan playmaker Yoann Gourcuff may start.

In-demand striker Bafetimbi Gomis may be given the nod ahead of Lisandro Lopez up front with the Frenchman racking up 16 goals so far this season.

Match Preview

Tottenham play host to Lyon tonight on the back of a 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League which provides Andre Villas-Boas and his men a fantastic opportunity to qualify for the more notable of the two European competitions – the Champions League – next season.

Lyon meanwhile are also well equipped to qualify for Europe’s top competition but trail first placed Paris St Germain by 6 points in Ligue 1. R mi Garde’s men warmed up for this encounter in the worst possible fashion however. They have just one win from their last four and come into this game after a 1-3 home defeat to Lille.

Tottenham will also be further boosted by the fact that they are unbeaten in the UEFA Europa League this season and have not lost, at home, in any competition, since Wigan beat them in a Premier League match in early November.

Former Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who joined from the French outfit last summer, will not be facing his former club for the first time with veteran American shot-stopper Brad Friedel getting the nod instead.

Likely Line-Ups

Tottenham

Friedel, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Dembele, Holtby, Bale, Dempsey, Adebayor

Lyon

Vercoutre, Reveillere, Lovren, Bisevac, Dabo, Fofana, Gonalons, Gourcuff, Grenier, Ghezzal, Gomis

Liverpool vs West Brom: Team News, Match Preview & Line-Ups

29 Mar

  • Venue: Anfield
  • Date: Monday 11th February
  • Kick-Off: 8pm

Team News

Ahead of the game, there’s a question mark hanging over Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge, who was forced to pull out of England’s midweek friendly with Brazil at Wembley thanks to a thigh problem, and will be assessed. Brendan Rodgers will no doubt hope for the kind of miraculous recovery that allows Manchester United and Arsenal’s injured international players to suddenly perk up after a friendly they were supposed to play is over.

Raheem Sterling, who also pulled out of the squad, is also fit, while Rodgers might welcome new Brazilian signing Philippe Coutinho into his first team, after his first week of training. He may need some time after a delayed start to his Liverpool career.

West Brom will be without left-back Goran Popov who begins a three-match suspension for spitting at Tottenham defender Kyle Walker, but midfielder Youssouf Mulumbu is in contention to return after a knee injury that has sidelined him since New Year’s day.

There’s no news yet on the role (if any) want-away striker Peter Odemwingie might play, after he became the butt of all transfer window jokes thanks to the collapse of a last minute deadline day move to QPR, who definitely had nothing to do with his appearance at the ground.

Match Preview

Brendan Rodgers welcomes former Liverpool assistant manager Steve Clarke back to Anfield, and will be looking to avenge his team’s opening day defeat by West Brom. That day went particularly poorly for Liverpool, with both Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel at fault for the display, but Rodgers will hope his defence is stronger this time out.

Jamie Carragher is likely to start for Liverpool, despite announcing his intention to retire at the end of the season, against skipper Steven Gerrard’s wishes, according to the MailOnline.

If Liverpool are serious about trying to come fourth this season, they will need to start picking up more points immediately, with the team currently sitting in 8th place. West Brom meanwhile have enjoyed a good season, and are just two points behind Liverpool in ninth, though their form in recent weeks has been wobbly.

They will hope they can emulate last season’s shock 1-0 result at Anfield to leapfrog the Reds and get their own season back on track.

Likely Line-Ups

Liverpool: Reina; Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Enrique; Henderson, Lucas; Sturridge, Gerrard, Downing; Su rez.

West Brom: Foster; Reid, McAuley, Olsson, Jones; Dorrans, Mulumbu, Morrison, Brunt; Lukaku, Long.

Referee: Jon Moss.

Arsenal vs Stoke – Team News, Match Preview & Likely Line-Ups

12 Feb

Emirates

  • Venue: Emirates Stadium
  • Date: Saturday, 2nd February
  • K/o: 15:00

Team News

Arsenal could hand a debut to Spanish left-back Nacho Monreal after he completed his transfer deadline day move from Malaga.

Fellow left-back Kieran Gibbs is still out with a thigh injury, while Thomas Vermaelen is a doubt with an ankle complaint.

Midfielder Mikel Arteta could return from the calf injury that has ruled him out of his side’s last four Premier League games, but forward Yao Gervinho is still contesting the African Cup of Nations.

Stoke’s new signing Brek Shea will not feature despite being granted a work permit after joining on transfer deadline day – a pre-existing foot injury rules him out of contention.

Fellow new recruit Jack Butland has been loaned straight back to Birmingham City for the remainder of the season.

Stoke have no fresh injury concerns, though defender Marc Wilson is still out with an ankle injury.

Match Preview

Neither of these sides come into this game in fine form. The Gunners won just one league game throughout the course of January and also sustained damaging defeats to City and Chelsea, leaving manager Arsene Wenger sweating over a top-four spot this season.

Stoke, while sitting reasonably comfortably mid-table, also have just one Premier League win to their names from January and have lost their last three.

This game will provide us with the opportunity to check out new Arsenal left-back Nacho Monreal from Malaga, but Tony Pulis will have to wait a little while longer before unleashing any of his new signings. Jack Butland has been tipped to become Europe’s best goalkeeper in the future, but he won’t arrive at the Britannia until the summer.

Likely Line-Ups

Arsenal

Szczesny, Monreal, Mertesacker, Jenkinson, Sagna, Cazorla, Arteta, Chamberlain, Ramsey, Walcott, Podolski

Stoke City

Begovic, Shawcross, Huth, Cameron, Wilkinson, Walters, Whelan, Adam, Kightly, Nzonzi, Crouch
