Garrett Hedlund has reportedly passed on the chance to play the male lead in Sam Taylor-Johnson’s Fifty Shades of Grey, US Weekly reported with shock and horror on Friday as if EL James’ bestselling trilogy was actually accepted as a well-written piece of literature that stimulates and challenges the minds of mass female audiences beyond your typical Saturday afternoon beach read.
Sources tell the magazine that the possibility of filming a trilogy was “too big a commitment” for the actor, adding: “Producers wouldn’t let him do just one film.”
Hedlund would have played Christian Grey, a rich guy from Seattle who takes the young and unassuming Anastasia Steele on an empowering journey through a whole lot of kinky sex.
The film, which has yet to cast a single role, opens in 2014.
